Cakes, Not Corporate.
That time I interned at a Bakery while my friends suffered in the Corporate world
The summer before your senior year is probably one of the most important summers of your life. This is the time when you should be securing an exclusive internship at a corporation worthy of being name dropped. If not at a well known company, then you better bet it's a kickass start up with crazy benefits like indoor hot tubs and company yoga sessions during the work week. I knew I wasn't interested in going into the rigid corporate world (not like I was qualified anyways, since MEEMS was my only job experience on my resume...) so long story short, I found myself working for two months at Michelle's Patisserie in Austin, TX. Michelle's Patisserie specializes in wedding cakes, but they also create some bomb-ass birthday cakes. I've never wanted a My Little Pony cake so badly until I saw the ones the bakers there could create. I may not have made $40 per hour, but it was so rewarding to see the elated reaction people have when you surprise them with a custom birthday cake. It's similar to the satisfaction of making jewelry for people, or seeing them wear your jewelry. I love that others are able to appreciate my designs and visions -whether that it be in jewelry or cakes. I also had complete, unlimited access to the BEST giant caramel, chocolate chip cookies everyday, so you could say I was a happy camper. But seriously, if you are in the Austin area, make sure to go buy yourself one of those cookies because they were FINGERLICKIN' GOOD.
